Nature Scavenger Hunt

5-8 Benchmark I: Students will explain the diverse structures and functions of living things and the complex relationships between living things and their environments.

Demonstration/Background Information: A nature scavenger hunt is fun and educational. Before the hunt, the teacher will search the hunt area and make a list of things the children can find. Ideas will include feathers, stones, a pine cone, twigs, and berries eaten by wildlife.
Activity: In this activity, students will find or scavenge for a list of items found in nature.
Materials: Student worksheet, a pencil, a container for collecting items, and a magnifying lens.
Procedure:
1. This is an individual investigation.
2. Students will go on a 20-30 minute scavenger hunt.
3. Students will locate and collect the items listed on their worksheet.
4. They will examine their “treasures” using the magnifying glass for a closer look.
5. They will complete a worksheet with the name of each item found and their sketch of what it looks like when magnified.
